Global Trading Sessions

Overview

24-Hour Forex Market:

  • Trades continuously
  • Different centers open/close
  • Sessions overlap
  • Activity varies

The Four Sessions

Session Hours (GMT, UK winter) Dubai time (GST), winter Dubai time (GST), summer Major Center
Sydney 21:00-06:00 01:00-10:00 02:00-11:00 Australia
Tokyo 00:00-09:00 04:00-13:00 04:00-13:00 Japan
London 08:00-17:00 12:00-21:00 11:00-20:00 UK
New York 13:00-22:00 17:00-02:00 16:00-01:00 USA

Gulf Standard Time (GST) is UTC+4 with no daylight saving. London and New York move their clocks; Dubai does not, so the Dubai times shift by an hour twice a year. The daily rollover falls at 17:00 New York time (ET), which is 01:00 GST in summer and 02:00 GST in winter.

For Most Traders

Optimal:

  • London open (08:00-10:00 GMT; 12:00-14:00 GST in winter, 11:00-13:00 GST in summer)
  • London-NY overlap (13:00-17:00 GMT; 17:00-21:00 GST in winter, 16:00-20:00 GST in summer)

Whatever the session, our rule is no new position from 30 minutes before to 30 minutes after a high-impact release (central-bank decisions, NFP, CPI, GDP). Spreads widen and stops slip around them.
