Forex Market Hours and Sessions

Learn about forex market hours, the four major trading sessions, and the best times to trade for optimal liquidity and volatility.

4 min read TradingTeaching Team

The forex market operates 24 hours a day, five days a week. Understanding market hours and sessions helps you trade when conditions are best for your strategy. Each session has different characteristics that affect volatility, spreads, and opportunities.

Why Forex is a 24-Hour Market

As one financial center closes, another opens. The market moves around the globe:

  1. Sydney opens Sunday evening (US time)
  2. Tokyo opens a few hours later
  3. London opens as Tokyo winds down
  4. New York opens while London is still active
  5. Sydney opens again as New York closes

This creates continuous trading opportunities from Monday morning in Asia to Friday afternoon in New York.

The Four Major Sessions

GMT and New York (ET) hours below are for the northern winter; Gulf Standard Time (GST, UTC+4) is given for both seasons. Dubai does not change its clocks; London and New York do. London opens at 11:00 GST in summer and 12:00 in winter, New York at 16:00 and 17:00, and the daily rollover falls at 01:00 and 02:00 GST.

Sydney Session

Hours: 10:00 PM - 7:00 AM GMT (5:00 PM - 2:00 AM ET); about 02:00-11:00 GST, an hour later in the northern summer

Characteristics:

  • Quietest of all sessions
  • Lower volatility and liquidity
  • Smaller pip movements
  • AUD and NZD most active

Best For:

  • Range trading strategies
  • Trading AUD and NZD pairs
  • Avoiding big news events

Tokyo Session

Hours: 12:00 AM - 9:00 AM GMT (7:00 PM - 4:00 AM ET); 04:00-13:00 GST all year

Characteristics:

  • Asia's best-known session (Japan ranks about fifth by turnover in the BIS survey)
  • Japanese yen pairs most active
  • Moderate volatility
  • Economic data from Japan, China, Australia

Best For:

  • Trading JPY pairs (USD/JPY, EUR/JPY)
  • Asian currency moves
  • Breakout strategies on JPY

London Session

Hours: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM GMT (3:00 AM - 12:00 PM ET); 12:00-21:00 GST in winter, 11:00-20:00 in summer

Characteristics:

  • Largest forex trading center (35%+ of volume)
  • Highest liquidity and tightest spreads
  • Strong volatility, especially at open
  • Major European economic releases

Best For:

  • All major pairs, especially EUR and GBP
  • High volatility strategies
  • Trend trading
  • Most trading opportunities

New York Session

Hours: 1:00 PM - 10:00 PM GMT (8:00 AM - 5:00 PM ET); 17:00-02:00 GST in winter, 16:00-01:00 in summer

Characteristics:

  • Second-largest trading center
  • Heavy US economic data releases
  • High volatility, especially at open
  • USD pairs most active

Best For:

  • USD pairs
  • US data days (no new position 30 minutes either side of a release)
  • Afternoon continuation moves

Session Overlap Times

The most active and volatile times occur when sessions overlap:

London-New York Overlap

Time: 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM GMT (8:00 AM - 12:00 PM ET); 17:00-21:00 GST in winter, 16:00-20:00 in summer

Why It Matters:

  • Highest trading volume of the day
  • Tightest spreads
  • Best liquidity
  • Major economic releases
  • Strongest price movements

This 4-hour window is considered the best time to trade forex.

Tokyo-London Overlap

Time: 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM GMT (3:00 AM - 4:00 AM ET); 12:00-13:00 GST in winter, 11:00-13:00 in summer

Why It Matters:

  • Brief but can see volatility
  • Asian positions closing
  • European traders entering
  • Potential reversal points

Session Trading Volume

Session % of Daily Volume
London 35-38%
New York 16-20%
Tokyo 6-8%
Sydney 4-5%
London-NY Overlap 20%+

London dominates, and the overlap period sees concentrated activity.

Best Pairs by Session

Session Best Pairs
Sydney AUD/USD, NZD/USD, AUD/NZD
Tokyo USD/JPY, EUR/JPY, GBP/JPY, AUD/JPY
London EUR/USD, GBP/USD, EUR/GBP, USD/CHF
New York EUR/USD, USD/CAD, USD/JPY

Trade pairs when their home currencies' sessions are active.

When NOT to Trade

Friday Afternoon: Liquidity drops, spreads widen, unpredictable moves.

Sunday Opening: Gaps possible, low liquidity, wide spreads.

Holiday Periods: Christmas, New Year have minimal liquidity.

Around Major News: no new position from 30 minutes before to 30 minutes after a high-impact release. Spreads widen and stops slip.

Bank Holidays: When US or UK banks are closed, expect lower volume.

Adjusting for Your Timezone

Create your own session schedule:

  1. Find your UTC/GMT offset (Dubai: UTC+4 all year)
  2. Adjust session times accordingly
  3. Identify which sessions you can trade
  4. Focus on appropriate pairs for those sessions

Many traders find the London open or New York open most accessible.

Key Takeaways

  • Forex trades 24/5, following the sun around the globe
  • Four main sessions: Sydney, Tokyo, London, New York
  • London is the largest and most active session
  • Session overlaps offer the best trading conditions
  • Trade currency pairs when their relevant sessions are open
  • Avoid low-liquidity periods like Friday afternoon
