Around the News

Our Rule:

  • No new position from 30 minutes before to 30 minutes after FOMC, CPI or NFP
  • Geopolitical shocks are unscheduled, so every trade carries a stop
  • Wait for spreads to return to normal
  • Then trade your normal setups

Risk Considerations

Volatility

Gold Can Move:

  • Often 1–2% of the price in a day; measure the current range with ATR
  • Sharp reversals
  • News-driven spikes
  • Position size accordingly

Stop Loss

Important:

  • Beyond recent structure
  • Allow for volatility
  • Not too tight
  • Honor always

Position Sizing

Conservative:

  • 1% risk per trade (a fixed 0.5% in your first live year)
  • Factor ATR into the stop
  • A wider stop means a smaller position, not more risk
  • Protect capital

Optimal:

  • London session (opens 11:00 GST in summer, 12:00 in winter)
  • New York session (opens 16:00 GST in summer, 17:00 in winter)

  • Reaction levels

Be Patient

Gold:

  • Can consolidate
  • Then move big
  • Wait for setups
  • Quality over quantity

Gold for UAE Readers

For a trader in the UAE, gold priced in US dollars is in effect priced in dirhams, because the dirham is pegged to the US dollar at 3.6725. A 1% move in XAU/USD is a 1% move in AED terms. Dubai is also a major centre of the physical gold trade.

Spot gold and gold CFDs are leveraged products: leverage magnifies losses exactly as it magnifies gains. In the UAE, firms in the DIFC are regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA), firms in ADGM by the Financial Services Regulatory Authority (FSRA), and onshore firms by the Capital Market Authority (formerly SCA). Check the licensed entity that holds your account on the regulator's public register.

Session times in Gulf Standard Time (GST, UTC+4, no daylight saving): London opens at 11:00 GST in summer and 12:00 in winter; New York opens at 16:00 GST in summer and 17:00 in winter. The overnight rollover falls at 01:00 GST in summer and 02:00 in winter.

Key Takeaways

  • Gold is the most traded precious metal
  • Safe haven asset with global liquidity
  • Often moves inversely to the US dollar, though not always
  • Interest rates and inflation are key drivers
  • The same technical tools apply to gold
  • Trend trading and range trading both applicable
  • Watch for volatility and position size accordingly
  • London and NY sessions most active
  • Monitor dollar for confirmation
  • Be patient for quality setups

Risk warning. This is education only, not financial, investment, tax or legal advice, and not a recommendation to buy or sell anything. Trading forex, CFDs, stocks, commodities, futures, options and crypto is high-risk; with leverage you can lose more than you deposit, and most retail traders lose money. Before you trade or invest in any form, check the local laws where you are and the rules of your country of residence, and consider your own financial situation; if in doubt, ask a licensed adviser. Past and tested results, and all examples, are for illustration only and do not guarantee future results.

The foundations are the same in any market

Position sizing, risk and chart reading work the same whether you trade gold or currencies. Our books teach them properly — the worked examples are forex, the thinking transfers.
